OTHELLO – The Othello Huskies soccer team best Prosser 8-1 on Monday night in their final game of the regular season.
“I feel like there was great chemistry going around the team,” said Huskies’ Irving Guzman. “We were talking about moving the ball around and I think we were just excited.
This game was senior night for the Huskies, giving those graduating a chance to play what could potentially be their last home game as they prepare for the postseason, said Guzman.
The Huskies were up 4-0 at the start of the second half, where they soon got themselves into gear and put up another four points within the first 30 minutes of the half.
“We beat them 4-0 at their place and to turn around and beat them 8-1, that’s showing how much we’ve improved,” said Huskies head coach Bernie Garza. “I told them in the second half, you have got to play like you did the first 20 minutes, and then once the guys started scoring, they all wanted to score.”
The coach said the overall lesson to apply from this game is the team’s ability to score.
“It’s just that philosophy of it doesn’t matter who scores, you guys can score,” he said. “We don’t have a single go-to guy, we have a lot of go to guys.”
With this win, the Huskies look to be sitting in third place overall in the Central WA Athletic Conference, which should make their first postseason opponent be Quincy. Both teams are currently missing starters due to injuries sustained throughout the season, said Garza.
“I’m really excited and can’t wait to see what else this team has got for us,” said Huskies’ David Salmaron.
Salmaron said he was happy with the intensity the team gave in their game against Prosser and that they are going to continue to work hard and train any chance they get.
“Even on the weekend,s we’re still training on our own,” said Salmaron. “
The Huskies are going to try and have an extra practice on the road in Royal City to prepare themselves for the postseason if scheduling allows. Outside of that, they will just continue to work passing, finishing and making sure to get their players healed up, said the coach.
“We’ve been working on our finishing because we’ve had some games where it’s one-zero, overtime and we mess up,” he said. “I think we outshot them, but we just couldn’t score.”
Othello has put up 25 goals in the past three games and scored 57 this season, the most in the league.
The Huskies prepare for the start of the CWAC 2A soccer tournament this Saturday, which is currently scheduled to be at Quincy High School at noon.
