Moses Lake looking to make the most of veteran group this season

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake softball, the reigning Columbia Basin Big Nine league champs and District 6 champs, look to repeat both accomplishments this season before making a run in the 4A state tournament.

Senior Gina Skinner listed the above as her goals coming into her final spring season with Moses Lake, and likes her teams chances in 2020.

“We have the motivation and the drive to do a lot better than we did last year, and that’s exciting,” Skinner said.

In addition to the ten returning varsity players, the Chiefs bring in large group of underclassmen who look to those juniors and seniors for guidance. Skinner said she, and the other seniors, just look to remain positive everyday.

“We try and motivate others, push them to work harder than they’ve ever worked before, and have the best seasons we’ve ever had,” she said.

Senior Savannah Ashley said this team benefits from the time they’ve spent together playing travel ball in addition to their years as Chiefs.

“We’re all just best friends,” Ashley said. “It just makes everything flow better and easier when you know you’re all friends out there.”

Heading into her final spring season, Ashley said it’s not so much pressure as it is motivation this spring to have her best year yet.

Chiefs head coach Michael Hofheins said they don’t talk much about end-of-the-season goals right now, and added this veteran group makes their own expectations.

“We’re in a better spot this year than we were at this time last year,” Hofheins said. “It’s a testament to our maturity. We’re loaded with juniors and seniors, and this year, we need to make hay.”

Goals and work ethic are already high enough with their own standards, Hofheins said.

“It’s just a fun group to be around,” Hofheins said. “I think we’re gonna have a pretty exciting year. Let’s go out next Tuesday, and see what happens.”
