Speaker to teach students about safe use of internet

| February 27, 2020 11:38 PM

MOSES LAKE — The White Hatter is back in town.

Brandon Laur, son of former British Columbia police investigator and White Hatter Darren Laur, will speak at all of Moses Lake School District’s 10 elementary schools over the week on keeping children safe on the internet.

Darren Laur spoke at Moses Lake High School and the district’s middle schools last year.

The White Hatter Team, as they call themselves, show people how to secure their social media apps and help parents and children “think critically” about what kinds of apps should and should not be on their phones.

They also advise parents, schools and other organizations on Internet monitoring and filtering tools.

Brandon is also scheduled to make a presentation to district parents on Tuesday, March 3, at the Columbia Basin Technical Skills Center from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The team takes its name from white hat hackers, who hack into computer systems to expose their vulnerabilities and security problems in order to help tighten and improve that security.
