The protection of divine Providence

| April 22, 2020 11:46 PM

Just over two months from now we will celebrate July 4, Independence day. Our Declaration of Independence ends with these rousing words: “... with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence ... ”

The Continental Congress issued 15 national days of “humiliation, fasting and prayer” during the Revolutionary War (1775-1783). Colonial and state governors did likewise, and General George Washington and his army appealed to Heaven many times. We have had numerous proclamations since, when our citizens called upon Providence for aid, protection and assistance. Yet, I have not heard one political or scientific leader, president or governor call for a national day of “humiliation, fasting and prayer” on behalf of our nation and the world, regarding this pandemic outbreak. Why? Perhaps the answer is found in Benjamin Franklin’s address during the Constitutional Convention when he said, “... have we now forgotten that powerful Friend? Or do we imagine we no longer need his assistance?”

Let’s take this opportunity to exercise our faith and trust in the God of our Founding Fathers and Mothers – the God of us all. In your congregations, families, and in individual settings, let’s call upon the God of all, the God of the Universe for his protection and aid in this time of dire need (and at all times).
