Othello soccer upsets first-place Grandview, reaches postseason

| May 1, 2019 3:00 AM

OTHELLO — It took a spectacular individual play and Othello was able to upset first-place Grandview 1-0.

Late in the second half, Othello forward Christian Arvizu dribbled by two Greyhounds in the midfield, avoided multiple defenders and nutmegged the goalkeeper to score the game’s lone goal.

“I knew at any given time he could score,” head coach Bernie Garza said.

The Greyhounds and Huskies traded shots throughout — Grandview looking to maintain its hold on first place, while Othello needed a win to remain in the district playoff picture.

After allowing four goals in the first meeting, Othello’s defense rode the play of Luis Luna and freshman goalie Juan Arechiga.

Othello ended its regular season with a 2-1 loss against Selah. However, the Huskies were the last to advance out of a four-team tiebreaker to reach the District 5/6 Tournament as the No. 6 seed.
