Basin roundup: Moses Lake's Hunter Cruz finishes third at national tournament
INDIANA, Penn. — Hunter Cruz, a two-time state wrestling championship for Moses Lake, took his talents across the country to the 2018 FloNationals in Indiana, Penn.
Cruz, competing in the 160-pound weight class, handled Ahmad Sharif in the first round 11-0 and Jon Hoover in the round of 32, 6-2.
Cruz continued to advance in the tournament, beating Joseph Walker in the round of 16, 4-1. Cruz ran into eventual champion Colt Yinger, of Ohio, in the quarterfinals and lost 9-5.
Baseball
Moses Lake 6-8, Eastmont 2-5
EAST WENATCHEE — Moses Lake stayed in the Columbia Basin Big Nine hunt with a doubleheader sweep at Eastmont, 6-2 and 8-5.
Moses Lake raced to a 3-0 lead after one inning and rode six strong innings from Austin Valdez to take Game 1. Valdez scattered eight hits and struck out two.
Dax Lindgren and Josh Williams drove in two runs each.
The Chiefs broke open a tight night cap with a four-run sixth inning, turning a 4-2 lead into an 8-2 advantage. Vance Alvarado was 1-for-2 with three RBI.
Ephrata 22-12, Wapato 0-4
WAPATO — Ephrata handled Wapato in a road doubleheader 22-0 and 12-4.
Gunnar Falstad pitched a four-hit shutout in Game 1. Ethan Etter had a big day at the plate with five RBI.
The Tigers opened up a 7-2 lead in the second game. Zac Berryman had two hits and three RBI.
Softball
Ellensburg 11-11, Quincy 0-0
ELLENSBURG — Quincy managed just two combined hits and two games, losing a pair to Ellensburg 11-0 and 11-0.
Ellensburg hurlers Carissa Burgess and Kalli Fahey threw one-hitters in each game. Burgess totaled 11 strikeouts.
Boys soccer
West Valley 2, Moses Lake 0
YAKIMA — West Valley scored twice in the first 20 minutes to beat Moses Lake 2-0.
Edgar Ramirez scored on a penalty kick in the eighth minute and Noah Stucki added another goal in the 16th.
Moses Lake goalkeeper Michael Villarreal made eight saves.
College baseball
Spokane 3-3, Big Bend 2-2
SPOKANE — Big Bend dropped a pair of one-run games to Spokane, 3-2 and 3-2.
Big Bend scratched out two runs in the eighth inning of Game 1, but could not complete the comeback. Cody Banks homered and had two RBI.
Tyson Yamane, of Warden, pitched three innings of relief, allowing one hit and no runs.
Spokane won Game 1 on a walk-off in the 11th inning. Spokane loaded the bases in the 11th and then Carsten Schmidt was hit by a pitch to end the game.
Derek Almanza hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to tie the game.
