ROYAL CITY — Royal High School continued to struggle in girls basketball, falling to River View, 70-52, on Friday and Burbank, 58-38, on Saturday.

“While we didn’t come away with a win, we did play hard and scored 52 points,” coach Bud Wilhelm said.

Josie Phillips was Royal’s lead scorer with 17 points, including a 3-point shot.

At halftime, Wilhelm challenged the girls to cut the then-15-point deficit to 10 points or less. They did twice before the end of the game.

“We were all proud of how hard they fought,” Wilhelm said.

Royal’s girls battled Burbank hard at home. The leading scorers were Danielle Lima and Jennifer Ledezma with nine points each.

Ledezma led in rebounds with six. Staci Hebdon and Sophia Rodriguez corralled five each.

“Again, we didn’t achieve a win but played a great game,” Wilhelm said.
