MLIRD bill stalled in House

| March 5, 2012 5:00 AM

OLYMPIA - Rep. Judy Warnick, R-Moses Lake, has announced that a bill that would affect the Moses Lake Irrigation and Rehabilitation District will not move forward.

Senate Bill 6512, passed the Senate and the House Local Government Committee. It is now resting in the House Ways and Means Committee.

The chair of that committee notified Warnick the legislation did not have support in that committee due to many different concerns.

Warnick and Sen. Janéa Holmquist Newbry reached an agreement last week to amend the bill to create a study to further look at the district and the contentious issues surrounding it.

Rep. Bill Hinkle, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, drafted the agreed-upon amendment. However, since the bill never came up for public hearing or a vote by the committee, no action was taken.

“From the beginning, my goal was to start a dialogue about the administration of this district, and now I plan to bring this discussion back to Moses Lake,” Warnick said. “Through this process in Olympia, we have understood the need for more to be done. It is now time for the locals to have this discussion and make the recommendation to the Legislature.”

Warnick promised to work with local officials and the public after the legislative session to ensure adequate community input is allowed before making any decisions about the work of the district.
