Snow, rain, doesn't deter Chiefs Koreis/Perez, Perez/Pryor

SPOKANE - The 66th Annual Inland Empire tennis tournament held in Spokane this past weekend saw plenty of action shortened by rain and snow, according to Moses Lake Chiefs coach Jon Wrigley.

"I've never seen snow in my many years involved in the tournament," Wrigley said of the late April white stuff.

Still, the Chiefs had some performances they could look back on and rejoice in their ability to take advantage of the opportunity, albeit chilly one.

"It was a great weekend for two of my younger players in Marki Koreis and Drew Perez, they lost to a tough Richland team who won the tournament," Wrigley said. "We had a solid showing and we continue aim to get consistency and be able to play opponents of various abilities at a high level."

Koreis and Perez tore through their first three matches at No. 2 mixed doubles before they eventually lost 6-4, 6-2 to a Richland duo in the semifinals and ended up in third place.

Tyler Knapp and Conner Koreis won their first two matches at No. 2 doubles before losing an 8-3 decision in the quarterfinals against Wenatchee.

At No. 3 doubles, Bryce Perez and Dallas Pryor rolled off three straight wins to get to the semifinals of their flight before dropping a 7-5, 6-1 decision. They had won their quarterfinal match by virtue of a tiebreaker triumph in the third and final set. The duo ended up taking fourth place.

Jessica Homesley and Courtney Kunjara took seventh place at No. 1 doubles and Becca Byam and Micayla Strickland ended up in the same position at No. 3 doubles.

With the district tournaments looming, the Chiefs wrap up their regular season schedule on Saturday with a 10 a.m., non-league dual with West Valley High School out of Spokane.
