Schwiesow's third-place finish leads Chiefs charge

ELLENSBURG - Moses Lake High School's girls swim team travelled

to Ellensburg this past weekend to take part in the Eastern

Washington District Pentathlon.

The Pentathlon, held at Central Washington University, has each

swimmer participate in five individual events including the

100-yard backstroke, breastroke, butterfly, and freestyle, and the

200-yard individual medley.

ELLENSBURG - Moses Lake High School's girls swim team travelled to Ellensburg this past weekend to take part in the Eastern Washington District Pentathlon.

The Pentathlon, held at Central Washington University, has each swimmer participate in five individual events including the 100-yard backstroke, breastroke, butterfly, and freestyle, and the 200-yard individual medley.

A swimmer's times are added from all five events to equal an overall combined time and then are placed accordingly to their overall combined time.

Chiefs junior Courtney Schwiesow made the most of her time in the pool by finishing third out of approximately 200 swimmers, with a combined total time of 6:50.43.

"Courtney went into the meet really sick and chose to tough it out," Moses Lake head coach Tony St. Onge. "It was a gut-out effort. She swam five events in the course of six hours and because she has enough training behind her she could go out and handle it. "

Other results for Moses Lake include, Amber Garret 7:22.89 (13th place), Elaura Grant 7:35.99 (23rd), Grace Hochstatter 7:38.18 (25th), Kelly Garrett 7:40.47 (27th), Hayley Nye 7:46.19 (29th), and Torii Dalrymple 7:47.91; 64 (30th).

Alyssa Knutsen would also qualify for the district meet later this season, after her performance in the 100-yard butterfly.

"The team went in nervous about it and I think they surprised themselves," St. Onge said. "They found out they could do things they might not have known they could do."
