Moses Lake senior focused on his next step

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake senior Logan Sperline described the last few weeks as surreal, still waking up in the morning and getting ready for school before remembering he still has four more weeks left at home.

“I’m a people person, I love seeing my friends everyday at school, having fun,” Sperline said. “I’m just trying to make the best of the situation, hopefully this virus gets better and we find a solution and can move on. But it definitely sucks as a senior having this happen.”

Sperline said he and his friends have done their best to try and keep in touch since school moved online more than a week ago. The senior Chief said social media is probably the way they’re staying connected the most, though.

Through all of this uncertainty and change, Sperline shored up one thing for the future by committing to the University of Redlands in California to play football this fall.

“When I went down there, the campus is absolutely beautiful, it’s a great place to go to school,” Sperline said. “One of the things Coach (Jim) Good was talking to me about was competing, one of the big things with the football program is competing. That’s all I wanted to hear.”

Sperline said it is a bit of a letdown, not being able to have the typical signing ceremony

The Bulldogs first came across the Moses Lake senior’s radar last summer, after being contacted by Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator Jim Good. After applying to the school, Sperline said he received an offer before even meeting the staff in person.

Sperline said he’s excited to join a program with a rich history under head coach Mike Maynard. Maynard has consistently had the Bulldogs near the top of conference in each of his 25 years at the helm.

“At the end of the day, it was just the best decision for me and my family, so that’s ultimately what it came down to,” Sperline said.

Sperline is coming off a tumultuous senior year. The Chiefs struggled, finishing 2019 winless. Sperline began the season at quarterback before moving to wide receiver as the season progressed.

“The change happened, and I just tried to come out and perform at the wide receiver position,” Sperline said. “Obviously, it was still a very frustrating season. But I just tried to stay with a positive attitude every day.”

Now, the Moses Lake senior said he’s excited for the opportunity ahead of him. Sperline said he feels blessed to have another four years of football ahead of him. Whether it’s special teams or breaking into the starting lineup, Sperline said he just wants to deliver his best effort each day once he makes the move south.

Sperline said he expects his role to be similar to that of Taysom Hill of the New Orleans Saints, operating as a more non-traditional quarterback.

“That’s going to kind of be my role going into my freshman year,” Sperline said. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m not comparing myself to Hill, that’s just kind of what my role’s gonna be.”

Off the field, the Moses Lake senior said he wants to pursue a career in education. Sperline said his ultimate goal is become a physical education teacher and football coach.

Playing college football has been a dream since he was little, Sperline said, and added his parents have been behind him every step of the way.

“I’m so thankful to have both of them in my life, and I wouldn’t be the man I am today without them,” Sperline said. “I love them very much, and I’m just very happy that I could make them proud.”
