Ephrata teen wins art competition

SUNNYSIDE — An Ephrata teen recently took home first prize in a congressional high school art competition put on by Fourth Congressional District Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Yakima.
Ephrata High School senior Karen Billingsley was awarded first prize in the competition, which was open to all high school students in the Fourth District, which includes Douglas, Okanogan, Grant, Yakima, Franklin, Benton and Adams counties, for her winning entry dubbed “1965.” Billingsley's piece will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol complex in Washington, D.C. alongside other winning entries from congressional districts across the nation. Billingsley will also be traveling to Washington, D.C. to attend a reception sponsored by the Congressional Institute. Second and third place finishers in the competition will have their works of art displayed in Newhouse’s offices in Washington, D.C, Yakima and the Tri-Cities.
“Congratulations to Karen Billingsley on her winning entry in the Fourth Congressional District High School Art Competition, and I commend all students who participated in this year’s contest,” Newhouse said. “All of the entries showed amazing artistic skill and talent, and I am grateful for the work of community judges who assisted in reviewing the artwork. I will proudly display these pieces in the U.S. Capitol and congressional offices in Washington, D.C., Yakima, and the Tri-Cities for all visitors to enjoy.”
