Basin roundup: Moses Lake baseball sweeps Ike, heads into districts as No. 1 seed

YAKIMA — Moses Lake clinched the Columbia Basin Big Nine league championship on Tuesday. Friday, the Chiefs added an exclamation point.

Moses Lake ended the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Eisenhower 12-0, 14-3.

As the No. 1 seed, Moses Lake received an automatic berth into the district championship game and another automatic berth into the state tournament.

Moses Lake’s lineup jumped on Eisenhower starter Drew Kornegay early in the opener with a five-run second inning. Zack Valdez doubled and accounted for four RBI.

Austin Valdez pitched a complete game, two-hitter with nine strikeouts.

The Cadets carried a 3-2 lead through three innings in Game 2 before the Chiefs scored 12 unanswered runs. Dominic Signorelli swung the hot bat with four hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Cody Alvarado and Dax Lindgren also drove in multiple runs.

Starter Jordan Rios ate up 4 1/3 innings, scattering eight hits to go with five strikeouts.

The district championship game will be held on May 12, 3 p.m., at Larson Playfield.

Warden 5, Cle Elum/Roslyn 2

CLE ELUM — Warden was able to reached the district playoffs after beating Cle Elum/Roslyn 5-2.

The Cougars did their work early, leading 4-2 after two innings.

After a spotty first inning, starter Wade Visker blanked the Warriors for six consecutive innings.

Cougars freshman Julian Egia finished with two RBI. Warden will travel to play East No. 1 College Place May 8 at 4 p.m.

Selah 8, Othello 1

SELAH — Othello lost in the district semifinals to Selah 8-1.

The game was scoreless through three innings, however, the Vikings were able to finally erupt with an eight-run fourth inning.

Jay Rodriguez drove in Othello’s lone run.

Ellensburg 8, Ephrata 1

ELLENSBURG — Ephrata was shut out through six innings and lost to Ellensburg 8-1 in the CWAC district semifinals.

The Bulldogs’ Tyler Polacek hit two RBI doubles.

Ephrata will host Othello May 8, 4:30 p.m., to determine seeding for crossover games.

Big Bend 7-3, Yakima Valley 0-7

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend went deep four times in its doubleheader split with Yakima Valley.

In Game 1, Aubree Barney and Ember Armstrong both homered to lead the Vikings over the Yaks 7-0.

Yakima Valley responded to take the second game 7-3, despite home runs by Big Bend’s Savannah Hughes and Hailey Huelsman.

Columbia Basin 17-14, Big Bend 7-6

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend’s playoff hopes took a blow after losing a pair to Columbia Basin 17-7, 14-6.

The Hawks led the opener 7-2 after two innings and added seven more runs in the sixth. Huelsman homered twice and Dacia Hobbs hit one out for the Vikings.

After a 5-5 tie through two innings, Columbia Basin scored eight unanswered to run away with Game 2.
