| April 3, 2018 3:00 AM

April 2, 1929 – March 28, 2018

LaDean Laura Layton, a longtime resident of Moses Lake, passed away at Columbia Crest Care Center on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at the age of 88.

She was born April 2, 1929 in Magrath, Alberta, Canada to Stanley and Laura Cook. When LaDean was 11 her mother passed away and she, being the oldest with three siblings, took on a lot of responsibility at a very young age. Four years later her father remarried Eleanor Stutz and they had three more children, making a total of nine in the family.

She married Lowell Lee Layton on Feb. 10, 1949 in the LDS Cardston, Alberta Temple. They were blessed with a son Brian and a daughter Catherine while living in Canada. In 1955 they moved to Moses Lake, Wash. where they had another son, Curtis.

LaDean worked various places in Moses Lake. She was one of the original pizza makers at Chico’s while its location was in Westlake, and over the years she worked at Penneys (dressing their windows), Sprouse Reitz, the Sugar Factory and the Olympic Drug Store.

She loved being a mom, and she and Lowell were always a great support for their kids and their activities. She had such an influence for good for all those around her, especially the youth. She was a very concerned, compassionate person and was always serving others.

LaDean was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved to accept callings in the church, serving in many ward positions. She and Lowell also enjoyed serving in the Seattle and Columbia River Temples.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother Robert Cook, two sisters Janet Russell and Marya Sommerfeldt and a great-granddaughter Ashlynn Laura Meldrum. She is survived by her three children Brian (Karen) of Moses Lake, Cathy Chandler of Spokane and Curtis of Moses Lake, nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by a sister Berna Hasenberg, two brothers Florian Cook (Linda) and Donald Cook (Kay), a brother-in-law Will Summerfeldt and many nieces and nephews.
