Mark Schoesler re-elected Senate Majority Leader

OLYMPIA — In a unanimous vote among the members of the Senate Majority Coalition Caucus, 9th District Sen. Mark Schoesler (R-Ritzville) has been re-elected to a second term as Senate Majority Leader.

Schoesler’s first term as Majority Leader began in 2014, winning election to the role after the departure of Sen. Rodney Tom, D-Medina.

The Majority Leader is responsible for establishing and implementing general legislative policies and caucus priorities. As such, Sen. Schoesler will continue to serve as the spokesperson for the caucus on legislative policy matters and will serve as the ranking member of the Senate Rules Committee.

“I’m honored that my caucus continues to put their trust in me to lead the Senate majority,” Schoesler said. “We have a big year ahead of us with fully funding education, promoting continued job growth, and building a 4-year balanced budget. I’ll be working closely with our members as we tackle these issues and more.”

It is the Senate Majority Leader’s duty to establish and implement general legislative policies and priorities reflecting attitudes and positions as have been expressed by the caucus.

The Leader serves as the ranking member of the Senate Rules Committee, represents the caucus to the office of the Governor, the House of Representatives, other state elected officials, state Republican Party leaders, and leaders of the minority caucus.

The Leader is a member of the Facilities and Operations Committee and chairs the Committee on Committees. The Leader sets the agenda for and chairs all leadership meetings.

The Leader is responsible for the selection of members to special, select, interim, NCSL, and CSG committees.
