Othello picks up several pins in win over Ephrata

OTHELLO — On a night where hall of fame inductee Ruben Martinez was honored, his former team made the old coach proud.
Hosting its last home dual of the season, Othello picked up six pins, one forfeit and one technical fall in a 53-15 win over Basin rival Ephrata.
Collin Freeman (152), Reese Jones (160), Chemi Cantu (285), Edwin Ponce (126), Sterling Roylance (132) and Alejandro Mendez (138) won by fall. Chris Melo (106), trying hard to earn pin points, won by technical fall.
Othello raced out to an early 18-0 lead before Ephrata’s Drew Anderson pinned Allen Rosalez (182). The Tigers strung together consecutive wins when Jared Durfee outlasted Edgar Martinez (195) for a 4-2 win.
After succumbing to an early take down by Rolo Reyes, Anthony Ruiz (220) rallied to win 8-3. Ruiz recorded two escapes and took Reyes down three times in the second and third rounds.
Cantu and Melo’s win put the Huskies ahead 32-9 before Ephrata’s Rey Hernandez closed the gap, 32-15, with a second round pin of Isaiah Munguia (120).
However, it would be the last match an Ephrata wrestler would have his hand raised.
Othello ended the dual with five straight wins, starting with an 11-1 major decision by Ben Garza (120).
Ponce, Roylance and Mendez stretched the lead to 53-15 after three pins in a row.
Bernie Garza Jr. ended the evening with a 6-4 come-from-behind win.
Moses Lake 40, Davis 31
YAKIMA — With some varsity mainstays resting, Moses Lake was able to hang on against Davis, 40-31.
Thomas Hamm (113), August Gibson (120), Nick Hara (126), Joel Torres (160) and Hudson Mauseth (170) picked up key wins for the Chiefs. Moses Lake also received forfeits at 182 and 220 pounds.
“It was a little scrappy but we came out on top,” head coach Jaime Garza said.
This weekend, Moses Lake travels to the Matman Classic at Central Kitsap High School.
Quincy 65, East Valley 10
QUINCY — Quincy received four forfeits and recorded five pins in a 65-10 rout of East Valley.

WARDEN — Othello upset Warden on the road, winning 36-34.

Wenatchee 124.5, Moses Lake 61.5
WENATCHEE — Moses Lake’s young team struggled against Wenatchee and lost 124.5-61.5
Noah Heaps placed first in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke. Ander Molitor finished second in the 100 freestyle.
Also, Moses Lake finished second in all three relays: the 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 200 medley.
