TUMWATER — As technology continues to transform the way students learn, many Washington parents are looking beyond the traditional brick-and-mortar classroom to fit their students’ individual learning needs.

I am the principal of a unique education option that is new to our state – Washington Connections Academy, an online public school that will serve students across Washington.

Our inaugural school year will begin on Aug. 29, when Washington Connections Academy will open its virtual doors to grades K-8 for the 2016-17 school year. An additional grade will be added each subsequent school year.

Working in online K-12 education, I often have families ask how virtual school is different from a brick-and-mortar school, and how Washington Connections Academy could benefit their family. One of the first answers that comes to mind is flexibility.

Online school allows for children to pursue their passions while maintaining a high-quality education. As teachers and leaders, we understand not every student can fit into a one-size-fits-all learning environment.

During my time as an educator, I have seen the virtual school approach to education serve a wide range of students, from those who are significantly ahead or behind in the classroom to those who need a flexible schedule or learn at a different pace from their peers.

I have witnessed online school foster success for a range of students, and I couldn’t be more thrilled that this great online education opportunity for students is coming to Washington.

With the guidance of our expert Washington certified teachers and our award-winning curriculum, we’ve created a supportive and successful online learning program for families and students that incorporates engaging learning tools, field trips and socialization activities with other students. Best of all, as a public school, there are no fees or tuition to attend Washington Connections Academy.

Another important aspect of Washington Connections Academy that I like to highlight to families considering enrollment is the opportunities our school provides to interact in person with fellow students. Our students can participate in many events and field trips throughout the state that foster interactivity and friendship.

Students can also join clubs and activities that align with their personal interests, including mathematics club, robotics club, health and sports clubs and National Honor Society, among others.

Enrollment for the Washington Connections Academy 2016-17 school year is currently open for students in South Grant County and across the state.

Interested families are encouraged to attend an online information session or online parent panel, featuring a high school guest speaker, to learn more about Washington Connections Academy and the enrollment process.
