Arizona county considers Ban on New Irrigation

KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona county is considering a ban on irrigation to slow the rate of loss from its aquifer.The Kingman Daily Miner reports that the Mohave County Board of Supervisors has agreed to work with the Arizona Department of Water Resources on a process that could prevent new irrigation in the Hualapai Valley basin.Supervisor Steve Moss says designating the basin an Irrigation Non-Expansion Area would prevent new land from being irrigated but would not restrict how much water can be drawn from existing wells.The INA wouldn't apply to residential wells or small farms.Moss says he is concerned about a prediction that Kingman will be without water in the next 30 to 70 years and hopes the INA will buy time for Kingman to find a solution.
