A discarded Seahawks hat helped police find an ATV thief last month.
EPHRATA - A discarded Seattle Seahawks hat helped police identify a vehicle thief after a chase last month.
Following several complaints of an off-road vehicle driving recklessly on surface streets in Moses Lake, police responded and followed the vehicle until it crashed into a fence.
Both the driver and passenger ran away from the scene, and police followed tips from neighbors about the suspects running through their yards, according to police.
Police found one suspect and in the yard of a neighbor found a Seattle Seahawks hat with the name "Matt Low" written on the inside bill, according to police. Police recognized the name as they had chased Low several times in Moses Lake and knew him to sell stolen goods.
After honing their search to that area, they found Low hiding in brush, according to police.
Low, 25, pled guilty this week to taking a motor vehicle without permission and was sentenced to about two years in prison.
The other suspect, Scott Slenker, told police Low picked him up on the ATV earlier in the day and he did not know it was stolen until Low told him after they wrecked, according to court documents.
Low has an extensive criminal history including convictions for burglary, theft, possession of a stolen vehicle and four convictions for possessing stolen property, according to court documents.
