Hope ends for Wahluke boys

MATTAWA - Hope of making the district tournament ended last week for the Wahluke boys. They dropped games to Warden, Kiona-Benton and River View.

The Warriors and Warden were tied for fourth place in league, the last playoff spot. So a win would give Wahluke a solid chance at post season play.

The game ended a 50-44 heartbreaker for Wahluke.

Both teams started out slow but battled to a 19-19 tie at the half. The Warriors took a four-point lead into the fourth quarter and extended it to 10 points. But Warden hit two straight 3-point shots and hit a couple of free throws to jump right back in the game.

As time wound down in the fourth period of a tied game, Warden hit a shot to take a 2-point lead. With six seconds left Collin Ahmann took the ball the length of the floor and hit a lay-in to tie the game and send it into over-time.

In the OT, Warden stayed hot and outscored the Warriors by six.

The scoring for Wahluke was: Ahmann 18, Barajas 2, Ramos 6, Onofre 6, Ponce 6, Abarca 3, Caro 15, Espindola 6.

Ki-Be was another tough league battle, Ki-Be winning 47-45. The teams went into half-time knotted at 23. Ki-Be came out hot in the third period, outscoring Wahluke 10-5 and holding on through the fourth

Although the Warriors had beat Riverview in OT earlier, they knew it would be a tough game at Riverview, and tough it was. The Warriors spotted RV a 13-point lead at the half.

The Warriors hit for 24 points in the third quarter to bring the game within 10 points to start the fourth. The Warriors got to within 6 points in the fourth but just could not get any closer, falling 71-62.
