ROYAL CITY - The Royal High girls completed a good week of basketball last week by dispatching arch-rival Wahluke, 59-47.

That gave the Knights two SCAC East wins this year, both over the Warriors. It gave them two wins in three games last week.

"A lot of girls stepped up, and we had pretty balanced scoring," coach Phil Daubel said. "We gutted out a good win."

Wahluke battled hard throughout the game and even led, 15-14, after one period. Royal took control with a 20-9 second quarter and put the game away with 14-4 third period. Wahluke won the fourth quarter, 19-11.

"We need to execute better down the stretch," Daubel said.

The Royal girls had one of their better shooting nights at 41 percent. They picked off 42 rebounds.

"We did a really good job on the boards," Daubel said. "Our defensive intensity picked up in the second and third quarter, which helped us to gain a little cushion."

Kayla Smith had a big night on offense, leading the attack with 15 points. Flor Araujo added 12, and Kailee Harris and Jacky Guadarrama scored 10 each.

Araujo and Harris led the rebounding with eight caroms each. Becca Lee added seven, Guadarrama had six, and Brittany Hebdon, Smith and Jennifer Ledezma had four each. Hebdon had two blocks.
