MATTAWA - Tennis in the early going has been more individual success than team success for Wahluke High.

In action last week, the Warrior boys tied Kiona-Benton, 2-2, and lost to Burbank, 2-1. The girls fell on both occasions, 4-1 and 5-0.

"We are just coming off spring break. So a lot of them are getting back in the groove of things," coach Adrian Sandoval said.

Gabino Abarca is doing well. He has only lost one match, a close 4-6, 4-6 contest with Burbank's Landon Wilder.

"He is continuing to learn and develop his game as the season progresses," Sandoval said.

Mariela Pineda is also playing well. She has only lost two matches. She lost to Burbank but won against Ki-Be.

"Last year she was playing doubles, but her transition has been a really good one," Sandoval said. "She's really improving her game.

Maria Mullen lost No. 1 singles to Ki-Be, but she forced Melissa Alvarez to three sets, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, and battled in the third set.

The boys won both singles against Ki-Be. Abarca prevailed, 6-0, 6-3, and Jose Espindola won, 7-5, 6-1.

The highlights against Burbank were hard-played No. 2 and No. 3 girls doubles.

Marivel Nevarez and Jennifer Aznaran fell 4-6, 5-7. Gabby Rodriguez and Marivel Nevarez went down 4-6, 3-6.

The win for the boys was a forfeit awarded to Espindola.
