Second accident at REC Silicon site

| July 11, 2012 6:00 AM

MOSES LAKE - For the second time in a month, REC Silicon required aid from Moses Lake city and Grant County resources.

For what officials deemed a "small fire," both crews from Moses Lake Fire Department and Moses Lake Emergency Medical Services were sent to assist, and  Moses Lake Police Department officers responded to help with traffic control.

"We stood by the property until we were released," Moses Lake Fire Chief Tom Taylor said. And while Taylor confirmed there was a fire on site, his crews were there for only 15 minutes before being released.

REC's Head of Community Affairs Sharon Palmerton said the fire alarm was set off at 9:50 a.m. Monday during routine maintenance activities.

Those activities created a visible vapor cloud, she said.

The clouds consisted of particulate aluminum oxide, steam and trace quantities of other impurities, REC said.
