Mattawa woman, unborn baby shot, die

MATTAWA - A 28-year-old Mattawa woman and her unborn child were shot Saturday night, and both died a short while later at the Othello Community Hospital.

According to Grant County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Ryan Rectenwald, the incident is being investigated by an Othello Police Department detective and members of the Sheriff's Department and the Mattawa Police.

As of Sunday, no shooting scenario nor a suspect had been announced. Anyone with information that could help is urged to call the MACC dispatch at 762-1160 or 888-431-9911.

The shooting was discovered at about 11 p.m. Saturday when police and EMS personnel were called to "shots fired" at 825 Third Place, No.102A, in Mattawa.

According to Rectenwald, responders found a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. She was seven and a half months pregnant.

The woman was transported by the Grant County Fire District No. 8 ambulance to Othello Community. She and the unborn child died shortly thereafter.

Rectenwald said the identity of the woman will not be released while the investigation continues. He body was turned over to the Grant County coroner.
