WENATCHEE - There is no question that the Moses Lake Chiefs boys basketball team has the chops to win some more games before the season wraps up in March.

Until then they still just need to get over the hump on a more consistent basis as they fell 60-57 to Eastmont last night at the Town Toyota Center to wrap up action at the NCW Prep Showcase.

Moses Lake (3-6) have lost five straight games but were in position to end the slide against the host Wildcats.

"You know I am proud of these guys and I love these guys," Chiefs head coach John Hohman said. "They are hard working guys who want to please. We just got to keep working harder and do what we know what to do. We just have to stay focused."

Both teams traded leads - Eastmont up 15-14 after the first quarter, Moses Lake up 31-30 at halftime, Eastmont back up 44-43 after the third quarter - before the Wildcats built a late five-point lead and then held on.

Moses Lake was hurt by 18 turnovers.

"They were tough defensively and they were up in you trying to pressure every lane," Hohman said. "They did a nice job and we were always a step behind."

The Chiefs were led in scoring by Matt Franz's 17 points, Gabe Porter added 13 points and Max McDonald finished with eight points and five rebounds as the squad shot 48 percent from the field.

Hohman believes it will be key to have more than those three players step up as consistent scoring threats to help build the Chiefs' ability to win at a more consistent rate.

"The key is that somebody, maybe two of the other players, are going to have to step up their game," Hohman said. "We also have Bryce Perez back for league so that will help. Those three are going to be keyed on and defensively, that's what your game is, so it's huge to have some kids to step up and be consistent. That will show where we are going to go."

Where they go next is on break before playing Spokane Ferris on Dec. 30 and then it's back to the Big 9 grind.

"We have to get ready for league and that's where it's going to count," Hohman said. "We already dropped two so we have to make up ground. We just got to work on all those little details, like rebounding, and pressure, because we are only a few steps away from being a really solid defensive team."
