Reid M. Scott
Reid was bom Sept. 10, 1920, in Milwaukee, Wis., to John and Leatha Scott. He passed away of heart failure, Sept. 9, 2008, at Spokane Veterans Home. Reid graduated from Hoover High, San Diego, Calif., and attended San Diego State. He joined the Army and served in Italy during WW II. He lived in Moses Lake for 25 years, where he raised his family, sold real estate and was manager of Columbia Basin Physicians Service for several years. When he arrived in Moses Lake in 1950, there were wooden sidewalks and muddy streets, and he always said the town would grow and it certainly has. Pick, shovel and a wheelbarrow were used by he and many others which created the Moses Lake Golf Course. Reid loved golf and as recently as three years ago still could outdrive and putt those much younger. He was a wonderful dancer, stamp collector for 78 years, he loved politics, America, the American Flag, and was a wise and a fun dad. Reid lived in Kingston and Silverdale for many years, where he worked in Kitsap County Real Estate. He and his wife Frieda moved to Spokane in 2002. He had great faith and was a member of Northview Bible Church in Spokane, where he had made many great friends. Reid is survived by his wife, Frieda of 33 years, his four children, Cheryl Johnson of Idaho, Teri Heckly of Kingston, Wash., Bruce Scott of Menlo Park, Calif., and Mark Scott of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Grandchildren, Scott, Michael and Richard Heckly, Bennett Scott, Brendan, Suzanne and Steve Johnson, great-grandchildren, Britany, Ashley, CJ, Jarrett, Noah and Tyce. Nephews, Gregg and Jeff Scott of San Diego, Calif.

Allan Gerald Carvo passed away in his sleep on Sept. 7, 2008. Allan was born in Yakima on Sept. 15, 1950, to Gerald and Minnie Carvo, the third oldest of nine children. His family lived in Yakima and Seattle before settling in Moses Lake in 1956, where Allan received his education, graduating from Moses Lake High School. Allan joined the Navy in 1969, serving four years in Gulfport, Miss., Diego Garcia and Sicily with technical training as a “SeaBee.” Following the Navy, Allan moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where he worked in refrigeration and construction. He resided in Phoenix for 25 years before moving back to Spokane a year ago. Allan was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Vincent Carvo, and a niece, Bobby Louise Bishop. He is survived by his son, Christopher Allan Carvo, Christopher’s fiancee, Sharon Ruiz-Schluger, his mother, Minnie Carvo, sisters and brothers, Robert and Annette Bishop, Jim and Patricia Hauff, Richard and Debra Hutchinson, Michael and Debra Carvo, Denise Carvo, Michael and Sandra Romas, Kevin and Kelly Carvo, James and Tina Carvo, 26 nieces and nephews, and 36 great-nieces and nephews. Services will be held at a later date.

Robert Stanley Walthers (Oyster Bob), 73, of Kennewick, died Aug. 19, 2008, at Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice House in Kennewick. Bob was born Sept. 25, 1934, in Independence, Ore., to Francis and Lillian Walthers. He graduated from R.A. Long High School in Longview, Wash., in 1952. Bob was in the United States Navy and served on the USS Edmonds No. 406. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, woodworking and was a member of the Elks lodge. Bob is known in the Tri-Cities and parts of Seattle as “Oyster Bob.” It started in 1984 and for many years later, Bob made oyster stew for the crews during the boat races.

Robert Darrel McAlavy, 77, longtime Moses Lake resident, passed away Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Samaritan Hospital. He was born Jan. 16, 1931, in Sylvan Grove, Kan., to Ray and Mary McAlavy, the third of seven children. The family moved to Jewell, Kan., in 1948, and he graduated in 1950 from Jewell High School. He married Maxine Louder on Nov.16, 1951. They enjoyed 56 years together.

Luetta Faye Maslen
Luetta Faye Maslen, 67, was called from her hospital bed at Samaritan Hospital to her Heavenly Father on Sept. 1, 2008. Faye was born on June 1, 1941 in Cortez, Colorado, the daughter ofWesley J. Maslen and Zola Othello Maslen (Ayers). In 1946, when Faye was just 5 years old, the Maslen family moved from the high plateaus of Colorado to the dusty gravel streets of a very young Moses Lake. Faye has seen Moses Lake grow from 300 people to where it is now.

J. Roy Lawson, 86, passed away on Aug. 8, 2008. Born in Pullman, on May 30, 1922, graduated high school in 1939 from Idaho Falls, Idaho, he moved to Moses Lake from Battle Ground, Wash., in 2004. Roy was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Thelma Lawson, stepson and wife, Greg and Marla Huff of Moses Lake, stepdaughters and husbands, Trudy and Edward Edgerton of Vancouver and Julie and Preston Ewing Kayes of Sequim, five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Joan Small. A memorial service will be held on Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. at Benson Funeral Home, 104 W. 5th Ave., Moses Lake.
