Ways to deter mail theft

Print Article

After seeing the front page article (Columbia Basin Herald, Nov. 17) regarding the two Moses Lake women arrested for mail theft, I got to thinking. 118 separate addresses 395 pieces of mail probably contained a whole lot of valuable information which could have led to identity theft, plus more.

Over 20 years ago I changed all of our home delivery to our post office box at the Moses Lake Post Office. The reason was that I had found some of our mail scattered and opened in our street. (We had a post office box already due to our then-business.)

There are some options to protecting your mail and deliveries:

• Get a small post office box at the Moses Lake Post Office.

• Get a box at the UPS Store near Safeway.

• Check out the mailboxes that are heavy-duty and lock, for your residence. Im sure that they are available at Home Depot, Lowes, et cetera.

I would think that these options would help give people peace of mind. As we all realize, situations with certain people are not going to improve. They are desperate.
