SOAP LAKE — Soap Lake’s Smokiam Days celebration features bed races, parade and vendors.
The event starts at 7 a.m. on Saturday with a pancake breakfast at the Soap Lake Senior Center, located at 121 Second Ave. S.E.
This is followed by a parade starting at McKay Healthcare and Rehab Center, located 127 Second Ave. It continues down Main Street.
Soap Lake Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kelley Skotland said the parade features horses, local businesses, floats and two grand marshals.
“We’re also celebrating our centennial, so our 100th year grand marshal is Mabel Thompson from Ephrata and our other grand marshal is Ed Norely of Soap Lake,” she said.
After the parade, people race beds by pushing them down the street.
“Kelley and some other people started that about three years ago now,” said Chamber President Denise Keegan. “They just race down around the corner ... They still have beds available at McKay hospital ... All they have to do is call the hospital.”
Skotland said she just finished her bed today, converting a hospital bed into a “wheelchair” bed.
Once the bed races are done, there is entertainment, a children’s karaoke contest and vendors in East Shore Park on the lake.
Along with the other events, the movie “Another Side of Peace” will play at Masquers Theater starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.
Sunday features a salmon feed on the lawn of the Notaras Lodge, located at 13 Canna Street N.
“The salmon feed starts at 1 p.m. and goes until 5 p.m.,” Keegan said, adding they will also have a raffle drawing for $100, $200 and $300 prizes available at the salmon feed.
The day will finish with fireworks at dusk. Skotland said they chose to hold them on Sunday because it was too expensive to hold them on Saturday because of the holiday.
