Stole mail in Moses Lake

EPHRATA - A woman who stole credit cards from a mailbox near Moses Lake was sentenced to roughly two years in prison and about two years in community custody Wednesday.

Rebecca Low pleaded guilty to one count of identity theft, one count identity theft in the second degree, two counts of theft in the second degree, one count of theft in the third degree, one count forgery and one count of possession of stolen property.

Low stole the cards from a mailbox on Diamond Point Circle and used them at Airway Deli to purchase cigarettes, fuel and lottery tickets. An employee called police about her after the cards were denied.

Julie St. Marie, Low's attorney, said Low knew many of her problems stemmed from drug abuse, and wanted to get help.

"She is fully ready to enter a program to help her," she said.

Low was sentenced under the Drug Offender Sentencing Alternative, which allows her to serve half of her time in community custody. The program is available to people who are convicted of drug or property crimes.

Low said she's had a 10-to 15-year long problem with drug abuse.

"I'm ready to change my life," she said.

Visiting Okanogan County Superior Court Judge Jack Burchard said he hoped Low took advantage of the program to get off of drugs.

" Wow! The court system works for brown collared crimes, but not white collared crimes like stealing thousands from potato farmers (commission). I'm glad she got what she had coming, but lets start sentencing all criminals accordingly. "
