The Columbia Basin Herald's first Sunday newspaper was delivered with promising results Dec. 23.

It was the first Sunday edition in the newspaper's 66-year history but won't be its last.

We offered the single Sunday edition to help us understand what it will take to start offering a Sunday newspaper every week.

Adding another newspaper to our regular daily schedule of Monday through Friday is a daunting task. There is a lot involved. We needed to test run a Sunday edition to understand the logistics involved with creating a sixth newspaper each week. There were a lot of unknowns, from how many more hours of writing does it take to the additional strain on our carriers to deliver papers six days a week.

The dust is still settling after our first and only try at a Sunday edition. It will take a little bit of time to scrutinize the information we gathered in creating a 68 page weekend newspaper. We are still gathering surveys and need to compile the information. (If you missed your chance to give us feedback, stop by our office and fill one out.)

We do not have a planned date for when a Sunday edition will be come a regular part of the Columbia Basin Herald just yet.

As with any business expansion, it takes careful planning before starting. Right now, we are doing just that. Once we have everything in order, then you can expect another big announcement about the next Sunday edition and how it will become a regular feature of the Columbia Basin Herald.

In the mean time, please be patient. keep the letters coming because your suggestions will help shape our future Sunday newspaper.

" One of the most important aspects of a newspaper is the NEWS -- current NEWS, not things 2-3-4 days old. That is what increases readership and looking forward to each day's edition.

It seems to be difficult enough for the Herald to report current NEWS correctly on a five-day newspaper schedule. I'm not sure it would be practical or cost efficient to attempt adding another day in a weekend edition newspaper.

How about concentrating on improving the newspaper as it now stands and worry about a more costly weekend edition at a later date? "

" Moving here from another area that had 7 day newspaper I was amazed to not find the herald on weekends except for old editions. Not sure about saturdays but sundays was notoriously known as coupon day. Thrifty shoppers looked forward to the many coupons that came out on sundays. Ofcourse this sunday edition costs more because they would also feature separate things just for sunday... another reason to have people buy it. It will be looked forward too if done right! "
